Witch Crafts: Make a Quill Pen

How many of you keep a Book of Shadows to collect information that you learn on your path for your craft?  Something that I love about a Book of Shadows is all of the different things that you can do to personalize it and make it more magickal.   One thing that you can do is to choose a magickal writing tool. This can be a fancy pen you decide is perfect for your Book of Shadows.  You may also find that you want to try a quill pen. You can go to a shop to get one, or you may find that you want to try your hand at making one, and that’s why I’m here with you today.  Are you ready to give it a try?

The first thing you want to do is choose a feather you want to use for your Quill pen. Keep in mind that it is illegal to have feathers in several areas, so you want to make sure that you check the laws in your area.  They can also be tricky to sanitize and clean.  You can put them in a plastic bag and freeze them for 24 hours, then wash them in a gentle solution of warm, soapy water.  The trick is getting them back to the shape you found them in.  Sometimes, steam can be helpful with that.  Keep in mind that many new age shops and some craft stores also have feathers that are already legal and clean! 🙂 That can be an easy win situation.  When you choose the feather, look for one that is relatively large and feels comfortable in your hand, as you will use it to write with.  You want to make sure that the tip of the feather, the part you will write with, is long enough, as you will hold it in your hand to write with.  You may want to bring home several feathers to experiment with.

When you get the feather home, you want to use a knife to cut it at a 45-degree angle. Craft knives are easiest for this; however, I’ve been able to do it with a sharp kitchen knife.  Once you have the feather cut at an angle on the tip, use tweezers and/or a pin to clean out the inside of the feather. This is the part where the ink will go in.  You want to score the center of the cut feather to help move the ink. Don’t forget to get a pot of ink! When you are all set,  try writing with it.  When you find one you love, you can consecrate it and store it with your Book of Shadows.

Have an amazingly magickal day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,
