My Top 10 Places to See In Salem (really 11)

 

 

Many of you know that I adore Salem and a lot of the old New England seaports. There is something about them that I just haven’t found anywhere else. They always feel like home to me. While many people go to Salem to investigate the witch hysteria my love of this town also comes from it being an old New England seaside town. From the narrow roads with the colonial houses packed together that show you remnants of the old seaside life it’s a place that I will never tire of exploring. That being said over the past several years I’ve been asked for recommendation on where to go and what to see. I hope you enjoy my list for you!

Bewitched After Dark Tours – I can’t recommend them enough. I would start any trip to Salem with Jeff. He’s amazing and you will learn everything you want to know about Salem from him. He does day and night tours. The night tour is not a ghost tour. It really doesn’t need to be when what happened in Salem is more frightening. I would personally recommend the night tour. There’s something about being in the Old Burial Ground at night that is just an amazing experience. You can check out my article on him here: Review: Bewitched After Dark Tours

The Hawthorne Hotel is one of the oldest hotels. I was lucky enough to finally be a guest at this hotel this Summer and it’s amazing. You can walk inside it to see for yourself as the staff is amazing. You will instantly be transported back in time when you walk in as it’s still quite reminisce of the 1920’s. Be sure to check out the mail slot above the elevators. Take a ride on the elevators as well. See if you can figure out which elevator I believe is haunted! It’s definitely a place that I would recommend that you check out. If you’re interested, check out my article about the Hawthorne Hotel’s Haunted Elevator.

Derby Wharf Light Station is one of my absolute favorite spots. I’ve been going there for almost 20 years now. It’s a small area that has had a lighthouse to help guide boats in the Salem Harbor since 1871. The wharf itself has been there since 1761. There’s a replica of an old ship called the Friendship of Salem that you can check out. They open it from time to time and you can walk on the boat. The reason that this is one of my favorite places is that when the tide is low you can make your way down on the right hand side of the walkway to the water and you can usually find old pottery. It’s amazing to make into necklaces. You will also find sea glass from time to time. Please don’t pass this information on to many people as it’s a special place to me.

The House of Seven Gables is a must. It’s one of the few tourist attractions in Salem that I definitely recommend. The walk through tours are very well done. The secret stair case is really a neat experience and the house helps you to get a good idea of colonial living in New England.

Ye Olde Pepper Candy Company – Across the street from the House of Seven Gables you will find an old candy shop. I forget the name but they have some original candies in there that are always fun to try. They are old Salem recipes.

Enchanted – Next to Derby Wharf there is a neighborhood where Laurie Cabot’s current shop is. It’s called Enchanted. I would recommend there. It’s always cool to get something small from her shop.

Wynott’s Wands – Definite must see shop. It’s like you walk into the world of Harry Potter. Gorgeous shop. Amaaaaaazinnng wands. I’m planning to take my son back there this summer.

Old Burying Point Cemetery – I believe this is a must see on everyone’s list. It is the oldest burial ground in Salem. Quite a lot to see there. There is a map on a stone in the cemetery highlighting stones that you will want to look for. If you caught my article on that cemetery there is an old looking house at the back of it where Nathaniel Hawthorne’s wife use to live. They would walk the cemetery at night and he often pulled character names from his stories from the stones in the graveyard. Peabody Essex Museum – Located right in downtown Salem where you are sure to walk by it, this museums deserves some of your time, perhaps a fairly large chunk of time if you can plan for it. It is listed as one of the top 20 art museums in the United States and it’s soon to be in the top 10 with the new area they are opening. It’s a pretty large museum and you will want to plan accordingly.

Salem Willows – Salem Willows is an old park in Salem. It is named for the Willow trees that the Europeans planted there in the 1800’s. It became in official park in 1858. I love it as it has an old style small boardwalk section with arcades and boardwalk type food? It’s small but really beautiful. There’s a tiny beach there that I’ve often had luck finding sea glass.

Witch Shops – Of course you can’t go to Salem without exploring all of the shops! There are so many that will definitely have you entertained while you look through all their treasures. The Derby Square Bookstore, Coven’s Cottage, and Enchanted are among my favorites.

While I know this article is about Salem I always recommend that if you are able to that you jump up to Gloucester and explore Crescent Beach and Stage Fort Park. While small it’s one of my favorite places in New England and is home of the original Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The Moon, being barely visible in the sky today, is a reminder that today you have energy of new beginnings. Think of it as a clean slate and a chance to begin new things in your life. This is a great time to recharge your personal energy by grounding and centering, and maybe going through your home with cleansing energy as well. When working with magick, use this night to plant seeds for new beginnings and move energy that will help to set the pace for what you want to happen this lunar cycle.

New Moon Blessings! Welcome to our October New Moon! This is the first New Moon that hasn't been an eclipse as well, letting us know that we are clear of that eclipse season energy and all the changes it brings.  However, we still aren't clear of the energy that the Season of the Witch brings! Remember that you are still going to be working on letting things go as you move closer to Samhain and getting ready for new energy to come with our Witch's New Year.  It's not an on and off switch though.  You are going to find energy flowing both to and away from you now and the New Moon tonight is going to start moving things towards you a bit more.

The Energy of Haunted Houses

 

One of everyone’s favorite topics around this time of year is houses that are haunted.  For some of us, it may be a favorite all year.  Yet again, this is something that I was also interested in incredibly early in my life.  As I saw spirits and I knew things were going on I was always looking for answers.  One of my gifts is sensing the energy of places and it’s incredibly interesting.  I can sense the energy of a place pretty much wherever I am.  What gets tricky is separating out current energy vs energy of the past.  It’s something I’ve learned to do through the years and it’s something that I find so much fun. 

Do I think houses can be haunted?  Absolutely.  I believe in it in terms of a place that may be frequented by spirits.  The other day I was talking to you about graveyards and I told you that I don’t find as much energy there.  Why? Well… how much time do you honestly believe that you are going to spend in the place that you anticipate being buried….. none? Maybe a day if you are proactive about things like that.  So you are much more likely to have energy in a graveyard that has to do with the living as people mourning can raise some tough energy.  The exception to this is if someone has been buried with an object.  I find that spirits can get attached to objects.  A wedding ring may be one example.  This can lead to spirits that you may find in graveyards.  Remind me to tell you about a set of model planes that I picked up from a yard sale and their owner on the other side.  Actually… maybe I’ll tell you that story tomorrow along with how you can have haunted objects.

When a person lives in a house they tend to put their heart and soul into that house.  It’s a place that they spend a lot of time.  It’s a place that they invest a lot of energy.  So I’m not surprised to find a spirit in a house or even on the land that they use to live on.  It doesn’t mean that they are lost or stuck here.  We have the ability to travel wherever we wish once we cross and you will find that sometimes souls come back to revisit old memories or to look after people or places that had meaning to them in any of the lives that they have walked. 

Is a house that is haunted always going to be scary? No.  I’ve been in plenty of places that have had the presence of spirits there who were perfectly warm and accomodating.  It sounds like I sat down to have tea with them, doesn’t it? I just mean that I can sense them there, sometimes I can see them or get information from there and they don’t care if I’m there. It often tends to match how the person was in life.  If they were someone that was warm and welcoming and enjoyed guests, you may find that they are similar on the other side.  We have soul traits that we carry.  It doesn’t mean you will actively utilize those traits in every life but they will be with you and you can choose if you wish to accept them in life.  For instance, a soul that is very open and loving may be like that in each life.  However, if they have something traumatic happen in a life that they are walking they may be more closed off in that life.  Every life that you walk is different.

Souls that are less than welcoming may have a variety of reasons for that.  It may be how they were in that life.  They may be a soul that doesn’t particularly like company.  They may be a soul that may struggle.  So many reasons and I could write a book about all that I know about spirits.  There’s just so much to them.  The majority that I’ve encountered have been pretty ok? I see them in so many places though. I can tell you that the disgruntled ones tend to make a bit more of a wave in the energy around you.  I have been touched by one that wasn’t a happy man and it wasn’t pleasant.  It was associated with something that happened with the land that I was on.  It was a strong lesson in how to clear energy for me.  You are going to find that people are more drawn to those types of souls because they are more noticeable? Grandma Mable who came back to check on her flowers likely won’t create as much energy as the lady who doesn’t want anyone on her property for any reason.  Does that make sense?

The best thing that I can tell you is to respect it.  If it’s not your property move away from it if you are having trouble.  I know I’ve mentioned in a different article that I’m more concerned about people using old abandoned houses for things they shouldn’t be like places to make drugs than I am spirits.  Be careful what haunted houses you go looking for if you go looking.  As far as stories of haunted houses there are so many! It’s the perfect time of year to curl up with a good book about haunted houses.  So much fun!

5 Herbs for Samhain

 

I often think that the best part of a witch's garden is the herbs. There's just so much magickal energy to find when working with them. It's also one of the things I go to first when working with magick. You can incorporate herbs into your magickal practice in so many ways by making things like teas, sprays, sachets, spell bottles, oils, and simply cooking with them. They are incredibly versatile and can bring some great energy to whatever you are trying to do.

Samhain is an important time of year to celebrate the final harvest and to honor our ancestors and loved ones who are on the other side. I am currently in the process of harvesting my herbs now. The other day, I harvested some of the mint, basil, and agastache from the pots on my deck. I was sure to scatter their seeds in the pots, as I am hoping that they will return next year. We had a frost this week, so anything I wanted that was in pots needed to come in. The herbs in the ground are a bit heartier, but even those have little time left, so this is an important time to harvest them. Let's take a look at some herbs that you may want to work with over the next few weeks and on Samhain and why. 

Rosemary—I bet if I asked you to think of an herb for Samhain, this would come up quickly. Rosemary is an herb used to protect, heal, and cleanse. It's also used in many spiritual practices for its ability to help with intuition and connection to the spirit. I have a wonderful old recipe for you that you can use to create Rosemary Remembrance Cookies.

Patchouli—Patchouli is a scent that instantly reminds me of Samhain. It is a beautiful, earthy scent that is incredibly grounding. Yet it is also an amazing addition to spiritual work, helping to boost your awareness of spirit and the things your intuition may be picking up on.

Sage—I'm pretty sure every witch has this on hand. For cleansing, it's a huge go-to. I personally like white sage bundles. Since this is a big time to work with divination, spirit, and spiritual energy, you should cleanse spaces before and after any spiritual work that you are doing during this time. You can also use it to help cleanse your personal energy.

Calendula or Pot Marigold - I know! That pretty flower out in your garden is also considered an herb! I do want to note that there is a difference between Calendula and Marigold. There are also some varieties of marigolds that you can consume as well. As always, make sure that you know what you have and if it's safe before consuming anything. I love this one in particular, as my Grandmother always grew Marigolds every year. Each year I plant them in her memory. Calendula and Marigolds are both amazing for Samhain. They bring beautiful, bright color, and they bring energy of light as they are both associated with the Sun. They are also both used in remembrance, so they make a great addition to ancestor altars.

Mint — This is another pick of mine for this time of year for it's protective energy and ability to help you to focus. It can be a great addition to rituals or psychic work that you may want to do. It's also one of the few herbs in my garden that will hang out with me all the way through Samhain and I love it for that reason! I have so many different varieties all over my yard and it is usually there until we get snow.

There are so many more that you can work with. These are just a few of my favorites to use this time of year.
